YOGI OF THE MONTH
April 2019 - Milly Rixey
What first brought you to yoga and how long have you been practicing?
My children’s interests in yoga led me to start classes and I’ve been practicing for about 20 years. My daughter got her yoga teaching certification in Hawaii when I was starting to practice so I joined her for the end of her training. After that I was hooked!
What is/are your intention(s) for your yoga practice?
My intention for practice, like life, has evolved. At first I stressfully followed instructions and tried to push poses to the limit, but as I became more familiar with the poses, my intention was to flow through the sequences. Currently my intention is to stretch, breathe deeply and relax into the poses.
What is your favorite pose and why?
Pigeon pose is my favorite due to the deep stretch in my side body and legs. I also welcome the chance to rest.
What is your favorite class at InsideOut Yoga?
Breathe & Stretch. I enjoy unwinding, and the class allows time to check into my body and mind.
How has the practice of yoga influenced your life?
Yoga has reintroduced a spiritual connection that I had lost touch with as my kids grew up and moved on.
What advice would you have for a beginning yoga student?
Stick with it and it will resonate in many parts of your life. Yoga is a lifelong journey and Susan provides ways to connect with the various branches of yoga both in and outside of the classroom.
What is your occupation?
I am a mother of four and grandmother of ten. I recently retired from teaching science at St. Margaret’s School and am enjoying life on the river.
What activities do you enjoy?
Yoga, reading, any activity on the river, and spending time with family. Gardening is my passion and retirement has allowed me to enjoy the four seasons of the garden.
What is your favorite thing about living in the Northern Neck or Middle Peninsula?
The river, the people and the country roads.
Is there anything you want to add?
Life is good on the river! InsideOut Yoga makes it better!
