YOGI OF THE MONTH

April 2022 - Jill Zelman

What first brought you to yoga and how long have you been practicing?

I attended my first yoga practice about 20 years ago and was quickly hooked as my body felt stronger and more balanced.  I took a long hiatus when business travel disrupted my schedule but started incorporating it back into my routine about 2 years ago.

What is/are your intention(s) for your yoga practice?

My husband and I enjoy staying active, I want to make sure I can stay strong as this body ages.  Yoga also gives me space to concentrate on me and my mindfulness while getting stronger.

What is your favorite pose and why?

My favorite pose is side angle with a twist.  It is the perfect blend of being grounded but also open. I feel strong in that pose every time!

What is your favorite class at InsideOut Yoga?

Saturday morning Yin Yang class is the best way to start the weekend.  30 minutes of flow and 30 minutes of Yin help clear the stress of the week away and set a positive attitude for the weekend!

How has the practice of yoga influenced your life?

Before I restarted my yoga practice, I was starting to have minor issues with hip and foot pain and just feeling weaker.  Since I have added back a regular practice those issues have disappeared. My body and mind now crave the time I give it in downward dog and even half-moon pose!

What advice would you have for a beginning yoga student?

Don’t be afraid to modify poses as you start – this is your practice and it doesn’t matter if your pose doesn’t look just like the person next to you.  Don’t forget to breathe!

What is your occupation?

I work in Finance for a large healthcare company and my team supports strategic technology projects for the Finance organization.

What activities do you enjoy?

My husband and I like to stay active, playing with our three rescue dogs including taking them out on our paddleboards or on the boat to play at the beach.  I enjoy reading, working in the yard and traveling when we can including to see our two sons who live out of state.

What is your favorite thing about living in the Northern Neck or Middle Peninsula?

Being on the water and having lots of space to spread out.
