YOGI OF THE MONTH
January 2020 - Kelly Strickland
What first brought you to yoga and how long have you been practicing?
I had just completed Ironman Florida in 2003 when a friend of mine challenged me to a yoga class in town. I laughed and took the challenge. A 90-minute power flow yoga class was more than I could handle. I struggled just to maintain straight arms in Warrior 1, and as the teacher talked of being rooted like a tree in the balance poses, I felt like a violently swaying tree in a hurricane. As a triathlete, I believed I was strong and in shape. But after barely being able to maintain balance or hold my arms up, not to mention being sore for two days after class, I found myself hooked.
What is/are your intention(s) for your yoga practice?
Two thoughts, which I recently mentioned to Susan: First, I feel like 'Kramer' when I come to class, sort of wild in the beginning, but as the class progresses, my soul begins to settle, and I find peace. I am hoping to learn how to settle my inner 'Kramer' and maintain that inner peace. Secondly, I hope to be super flexible by the time I am 80 years old.
What is your favorite pose and why?
Balance poses, as I have so much to learn.
What is your favorite class at InsideOut Yoga?
Any class I can get to. I have always learned something in any class I have attended.
How has the practice of yoga influenced your life?
Challenging the belief that I knew myself, the practice continues to teach me to listen and honor my body and soul.
What advice would you have for a beginning yoga student?
Don't be afraid, try not to judge yourself harshly, breathe, and smile at your foibles.
What is your occupation?
I worked as a Physician’s Assistant, spent a few years in the Navy, and am now a farmer.
What activities do you enjoy?
Swimming, skiing, slacklining, reading and, of course, yoga.
What is your favorite thing about living in the Northern Neck or Middle Peninsula?
I consider the Northern Neck a diamond in the rough. I am a Yankee by birth, southern by choice. I am home here.
Is there anything you want to add?
I have practiced yoga on and off for many years, at different studios and with different teachers. InsideOut Yoga has been the most positive experience, I am grateful for Susan and the opportunity she provides to this community.
