YOGI OF THE MONTH
January 2021 - Katie Conschafter
What first brought you to yoga and how long have you been practicing?
When we moved to Richmond in 2001, my HCP suggested I add yoga to my exercise routine. Since that time I have been doing yoga on a regular basis. When we purchased a condo on Wilton Creek, I knew I needed to find a place at the river to do yoga. I was so happy to find Susan and InsideOut Yoga!
What is/are your intention(s) for your yoga practice?
Strength – core and overall. Flexibility, balance, calm/inner peace.
What is your favorite pose and why?
Oh there are so many! I guess sun salutations and doing them in a variety of ways. Also, downward dog and child’s pose! My least favorite are headstands and handstands. I’d like to be able to do L position against the wall without a heavy hand helping me on my back and am working on that!
What is your favorite class at InsideOut Yoga?
All of them! I love the variety Susan has.
How has the practice of yoga influenced your life?
It’s definitely added strength and calm to my life. It was especially helpful when I was working full time and spending lots of time in my car.
What advice would you have for a beginning yoga student?
Just start! Find a teacher you like and a time that works for you. Start one on one.
What is your occupation?
I’m a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator of 40 years! Each of the six states we’ve lived in have provided a new work experience for me. When I retired from J&J in 2016, I started my own business. I now do contract work in diabetes technology for two companies and The Center for Diabetes Technology at UVA.
What activities do you enjoy?
Anything outside! Hiking, swimming, boating, biking, gardening. In 2019 I became a Master Gardener and enjoy volunteering in Jacks Garden in Maymont.
Inside activities – cooking, reading, sewing, smocking, knitting. I don’t sit still well!
What is your favorite thing about living in the Northern Neck or Middle Peninsula?
I love the beauty, the farms, the local farm stands and family-owned businesses. There are so many hidden gems all around us: the water, the history, plus all the fun places to explore on land and water.
Is there anything you want to add?
I was born in Canada and have dual citizenship!
