YOGI OF THE MONTH
Carol Muratore - January 2024
What first brought you to yoga and how long have you been practicing?
I had tried yoga a few times over the years, but it just didn’t click for me. Then in May of 2022, I offered a yoga instructor the use of my commercial property space at no charge as a way to keep the building “relevant” while it was on the market. I tried a couple of her classes and unexpectedly fell in love with yoga.
What is/are your intention(s) for your yoga practice?
My intention during yoga practice is to let go and accept that I cannot change a lot of things. This is difficult for me because during my career, I was implored to be a “change agent,” a rainmaker and someone who should do what others thought impossible. I attended countless workshops and training sessions to learn how to control everything.
What is your favorite pose and why?
My favorite pose is Dhanurasana (Bow Pose). Backbend poses just feel marvelous, especially if you tend to hunch.
What is your favorite class at InsideOut Yoga?
Vinyasa Basics and Focus on Form are my favorites. Getting the pose accurate is most important to me. I want to do them correctly, so I don’t mind practicing the foundational offerings in between taking the other more advanced classes.
How has the practice of yoga influenced your life?
Yoga has made me slow down and appreciate everything from the air we breathe to everyday simple things. It has helped me help others who are feeling stressed because I'm more aware or in tune and can offer a good ear.
What advice would you have for a beginning yoga student?
Savor the process of learning. You don’t have to be perfect to enjoy the luxury that you are lucky enough to have an hour or so just to yourself. Think of it as a gift to yourself.
What is your occupation?
Today I’m an artist and an aspiring yogi. Before that, I spent 32 years as a healthcare executive. Then, I bought a building in the Northern Neck and created a wonderful shop called Plum Summer. Being my own boss was the most rewarding work I have ever done. However, my greatest accomplishment in life is that I raised 4 children who really like each other, and they have gifted me with 5 beautiful grandchildren.
What activities do you enjoy?
I love anything that involves a paint brush. My heart is owned by two small dogs. I walk them 5-6 times a day. And my favorite thing to do is “nothing”. I work at being as useless as possible. But others always have plans for me.
What is your favorite thing about living in the Northern Neck or Middle Peninsula?
Peace and quiet are often unappreciated in society. Many folks feel they need constant stimulation or access to commercial venues. Visitors ask me how I can live here without a Starbucks. I love that I can drive without the radio on, see fields for miles and not have to deal with the cacophony of suburban living. I just brew a great cup of coffee at home.
