YOGI OF THE MONTH
March 2020 - Melissa Kerby
What first brought you to yoga and how long have you been practicing?
I don’t recall what first led me to Power Yoga at ACAC in Richmond 15 years ago, but I do vividly remember the end of that class. Lying still, I was startled awake by the thud of a dropped weight in an adjacent room. I don’t sleep well in my bed at night, nor do I nap, so dozing off in public was both mystifying and magical. I was hooked.
What is/are your intention(s) for your yoga practice?
To be still, quiet, in tune with my body, and generate heat (with hypothyroidism, I’m almost always cold). I also anticipate the bond and community of fellow-yogis.
What is your favorite pose and why?
I really appreciate Downward Facing Dog. It relaxes and restores, yet is challenging and complex. Better yet - I can do it! Prior to yoga, I had very little upper body strength, so being able to hold Down Dog was a milestone. It continues to push me as subtle adjustments present new room for growth.
What is your favorite class at InsideOut Yoga?
If I could take only one class, it would be Vinyasa Flow, but I love Restorative too; they’re perfect partners.
How has the practice of yoga influenced your life?
Physically, my body is stronger and more flexible. My arthritic joints and back (herniated thoracic disc) are also less glitchy, but the mental/emotional influence is even more profound. Finding a different gear in my brain has opened up new realms of consciousness. I’m introverted and introspective - and despite focusing on my own mat – yoga, ironically, helps me linger less inside my head and be more aware of a collective experience.
What advice would you have for a beginning yoga student?
Be patient, gentle, and open; be patient.
What is your occupation?
I worked for a full-service video production company (back in the day when they still existed) before transitioning to full-time mom and homemaker. I did some freelance writing work and homeschooled a few years. I still to do some paid writing jobs.
What activities do you enjoy?
I love to learn, in general, so read and listen to podcasts often. For several years, I’ve been diving deep into nutrition, and disease prevention and reversal. I also walk at Hughlett Point as often as possible. And I’m delighted to be back in a group setting for yoga.
What is your favorite thing about living in the Northern Neck or Middle Peninsula?
At one year here, I’m humbled every day by the gifts of water and Hughlett Point.
Is there anything you want to add?
I’m so very grateful for this lovely area and its amazing resources, including IOY/Susan Johnson and my fellow yogis.
