Hit Send

I love shock humor and sexual innuendo, and it makes me laugh out loud to text friends with well-timed edgy words or sarcastic phrases. I’ll sometimes hesitate before hitting send on an especially out-there text, even with friends who share my sense of humor, but the hilarity and conversation that generally ensues is almost always worth the risk.

I’ve been thinking lately about hitting send as a metaphorical concept: You hit send when you show up on your mat. You hit send when you tell someone how you feel about them. You hit send when you start a new career, business venture or creative project. You hit send when you make a difficult decision. You hit send when you stand up to power for what you believe is right.

Or maybe you don’t hit send. Sometimes it’s because you forget to hit it and then you wonder why you haven’t gotten a reply. Or sometimes a cooler head prevails and you realize it’s not your best choice. Sometimes you just lose your nerve.

You’ve also got to think about who you’re sending that shock-humor-filled text to. I’ve had a couple of mini heart attacks after realizing I had sent texts to the wrong people the second after I had hit send. (Note to self: reply all is not always your friend.)

Hitting send requires courage, presence, and discernment. Sometimes I do my best proofreading after I hit send. But I keep coming back and I keep hitting send.

How about you? How often do you hit send? When or why have you hesitated? Which do you regret more often: hitting or not hitting send?
