Church Marquees
“GOD IS IN CONTROL”
“JESUS SAVES”
“PUT YOUR TRUST IN THE LORD”
“HE IS RISEN”
“QUIT ST3ALING OUR L3TT3RS”
I love reading church marquees, and last month I came across the above messages on a drive to Gloucester. (Ok, not the last one, but I did see the other four!)
I have a high regard for Christianity, but I’m not a practicing Christian, so I have a habit of substituting the word love for Jesus or God on marquees or in church services as a way of connecting to my own spiritual practice. My son, Christian, and I were talking about this habit, and when I listed the above marquees, he suggested, “Love reigned fire and death on the Sodomites.”
Ok, so it doesn’t always fit, but it works 99% of the time.
It is said that the opposite of love is not hate, but fear, and this pandemic has made fear a centerpiece across the globe. But it is also said that love trumps hate, and I can’t tell you how many outpourings of love I’ve personally experienced or heard about by people who have acted from a place of abundance in a time of scarcity, or from a place of connection and courage in a time of distance and fear. I know you have too.
Even though we can’t be together, yogis, I somehow feel connected to you now more than ever. Maybe it’s because:
Love is in control
Love saves
Put your trust in love
Love is risen
