YOGI OF THE MONTH

October 2014 - Cathy Mecke

What first brought you to yoga and how long have you been practicing?

I have been practicing yoga on and off for about 10 years.  I started taking classes because I was looking for an exercise routine that wasn’t high impact.  Yoga is a nice combination of stretching and strengthening.

What is/are your intention(s) for your yoga practice?

I never really thought about my intentions until I started Susan’s class!  I like that she prompts me to think about my intentions and also her daily message about giving thanks for all that I have…so simple but I think we can take it for granted.

What is your favorite pose and why?

I can’t think of a favorite pose.  It depends on how I am feeling…I love the twists and hip openers, sometimes I really get into the balancing poses where you find your drishti….and of course child’s pose always feels great!

What is your favorite class at InsideOut Yoga?

I like Power Flow, Steady Flow and Breathe & Stretch.

How has the practice of yoga influenced your life?

Yoga is the one form of exercise that I have stayed with over the years.  When I miss a class or two I really feel the difference physically and emotionally.

What advice would you have for a beginning yoga student?

Just give it a try! Yoga is wonderful because you need to concentrate so intently on what you’re doing you don’t really have time to think about anything else!

What is your occupation?

I worked for General Motors before I was married.  I was fortunate that I could be a stay-at-home mom for our 3 children.  We moved around the country early in our marriage when the kids were young so I was glad I could be a stabilizing force for them.  I volunteered in their schools and in community organizations.

What activities do you enjoy?

I enjoy tennis and needlepoint.  I like golf but haven’t played in a while!  I also enjoy cooking and working in the yard.

What is your favorite thing about living in the Northern Neck?

I am a come-here.  We are celebrating our first anniversary in our new home this month!  I have really enjoyed meeting so many friendly and welcoming people and I think they are all here for the beauty and serenity of this unique area!

Is there anything you want to add?

Thank you, Susan, for your guidance on the mat!  You are a wonderful teacher!
