YOGI OF THE MONTH

What first brought you to yoga and how long have you been practicing?

I had had back surgery twice and knew my aerobics career was over. (I had taught for almost 20 years.) A neighbor’s daughter had opened a new studio in Richmond and invited me to take a class. I was hooked!

What is your intention for your yoga practice?

I don’t have an intention per se. I like the way it makes me feel physically, mentally and spiritually.

What is your favorite pose and why?

I have two:  Parsvakonasana  because it is such a powerful, energy moving pose and Down Dog because it embodies everything that yoga is, all the apparent paradoxes such as strong but gentle, complex yet simple, energetic but restful.

Who or what inspires your practice at InsideOut Yoga?

The instruction often meets me where I am.

How has the practice of yoga influenced your life?

It has definitely made me more aware of myself and life in general and how they are the same.  I try to apply what I learn on the mat to the way I live.  Each day I seem to hear something that really resonates with me.  Having each month focus on a principle has been incredible in that each issue has been EXACTLY what I needed to hear.

What advice would you have for a beginning yoga student?

Stay with it.  You will get better more quickly than you think.

What is your occupation?

I retired from being a school psychologist many years ago. I now wait on my husband, two dogs and a cat on a volunteer basis.

What activities do you enjoy?

Gardening and playing on the water.

What is your favorite thing about living in the Northern Neck?

Its beauty.

Is there anything you want to add?

Just that I am so glad Susan opened InsideOut Yoga! It has literally changed my life.
