Pillar & Peacock

This month's business blog features Adrianne Bugg, co-owner of Pillar & Peacock. Adrianne has this vibrancy about her that’s infectious and inspiring. She’s someone you just want to be around. Her business has really taken off with new offices in Florence, AL and Irvington, VA. She also has a pretty mean yoga practice.

Tell me about Pillar & Peacock.

Pillar & Peacock is an interior design firm in Irvington, VA and Florence, AL. We help clients redesign and renovate homes, build homes, and furnish them. Our focus is to work with clients to create a beautiful space that is a reflection of who they are.

How long has the business been there and when did you first become a part of it?

We have been in business since 2011. Brandeis and I started it from the ground up! Brandeis was at 3North in Richmond prior to starting P&P. I was in the finance world but have always loved design.

What ignited your passion for this particular line of work?

I used to think I was going to be an architect. I have sketch book upon sketch book of drawings I did when I was young. I have also always played with color and scale. Design is something I have always been passionate about. Brandeis and I both feel passionate because of the impact a properly designed space can have on your overall well-being.

How many employees do you have?

Right now there are two partners (Adrianne & Brandeis), two interns, and a design assistant. So, five of us!

What do you like most about your work?

There are multiple aspects that we love about our work. One of the best, however, is seeing something that was once in your head materialize in real life. Then, seeing how happy the client is…it’s very rewarding.

Excluding yours, what local business/organization do you admire most and why?

In a small town like Irvington, I have a hard time not admiring any business here. Any entrepreneur in our area has to continually stay on their toes to be creative in ways to attract clients/customers and stay relevant. It’s true anywhere, but particularly in a rural environment.

What advice would you give to someone who would like to start a business?

Decide who you are and who you want to be, then go be that person/business. Have a well thought out brand and plan to get it off the ground. Seek advice from other business owners you admire.

What do you do in your non-work time?

I enjoy running, reading, and playing with my kiddos. They are 8 and 5…riding bikes and swimming is big right now.

How do you manage stress?

Running, hard core workouts and making sure I carve out time for myself.
